Smart MEP design paves the way for pioneering biomedical research at Cal State LA
Cal State LA's new BioSpace Innovation Center is currently under construction in the southwestern part of the campus. The 2-story, steel-framed building will include offices and fully equipped wet and dry labs for cutting-edge bio-medical research. This LEED Gold seeking project will have leasable space for researchers and entrepreneurs looking to conduct significant research in an urban university setting close to biomedical firms and talent.
We designed the MEP systems for this new construction, taking care to meet the extra demands associated with laboratory and support spaces. The primary research area is sectioned off from the area that are publicly accessible, essentially dividing the building into two zones. Most of the building will be cooled by a rooftop air cooled chiller and heated by a single hot water boiler. An outside air rooftop air handling unit will serve the wet labs while a separate rooftop AHU will serve the offices and conferences rooms. The building systems include compressed air piping distribution, vacuum piping distribution, acid waste clarifier and low-pressure gas system. Electricity will be supplied by a 5kv substation and the facility will be equipped with electronic meters and surge protection devices. We also designed the lighting for the lobby, first-floor conference room and coworking space.
