The 35,000 SF College of Professional and International Education (CPIE) is CSULB’s first ever Net-Zero Energy (NZE) building. This project incorporates many of the things we’re passionate about: Cal State Long Beach and the wider Long Beach community, energy efficient design and sustainable practices. This $32 million design-build partnership team included Matt Construction, ZGF Architects, MHP Structural Engineers, PSOMAS and Vantage Technology. Collaborative efforts and innovative solutions have earned this building a LEED Platinum Certification.

  • Solution

The CPIE building houses classrooms and a conference center and is located along the central portion of the campus. Our design is based on a holistic approach involving ideal building orientation and window placement and an efficient envelope to maximize daylighting and minimize electric lighting during the day. The windows also allow for natural ventilation to the spaces; we combined this natural ventilation strategy with the use of ceiling fans help improve occupant comfort and minimize HVAC energy costs. We also incorporated a direct outside air system with demand control and radiant floor cooling and heating. Our team used water conservation strategies like smart fixtures, aerators and storm water capture to minimize water use. These elements – along with rooftop solar panels - combine to achieve energy neutrality and are consistent with Savings by Design Criteria that reduces overall energy use. The building’s exterior covered spaces feature plenty of greenery for students and the public to relax in and enjoy.
